Braces

Modern Braces for the Modern World

Every year, millions of people worldwide choose to straighten their teeth with braces. And there's a good reason why: Braces are one of the most effective ways to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime!

But what exactly are braces? How do they work? And how can you make sure you're getting the best possible treatment?

OrthoMike aims to deliver the highest quality care possible using the different types of braces. We're proud to be one of the most experienced and qualified orthodontic practices in Florida. We offer a wide range of braces to our patients, including traditional metal, lingual, and clear ceramic braces.

What are Braces?

Braces are devices that are used to align and straighten teeth. Our orthodontists use them to apply a gentle, constant force to your teeth in order to move them into the correct position.

They are made of several different parts, including:

  • Brackets - the part which is bonded to each tooth
  • Archwires - they connect the brackets and apply pressure to teeth
  • Ligatures or "o-rings" - they hold the archwire in place
  • Bands - they are used around back molars to provide support
  • Spacers - they are used when a small space is needed between teeth
  • Rubber bands - they apply additional force to move teeth

How Do Braces Work?

When brackets and archwires are installed, the pressure applied by braces gradually moves teeth into their proper position. Tooth movement occurs when the roots of teeth are moved by an external force.

The periodontal ligament that surrounds each tooth root is stretched on one side and compressed on the other. This causes the bone around the tooth root to remodel, and the tooth is gradually moved into the correct position.

This happens as our orthodontist adjusts the archwires every few weeks. We carefully control the amount of force applied to the teeth, so that tooth movement is gradual and comfortable.

Braces can treat mild to severe cases of misalignment and can be used to correct crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. The orthodontic team at OrthoMike will develop a personalized treatment plan to ensure that you achieve the best possible results.

What Are the Different Types of Braces?

#1 - Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel and are bonded to the front of the teeth.

Metal braces are strong and durable, and they can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems. They are also less expensive than other types.

Disadvantages of metal braces include the fact that they are visible and can be uncomfortable. Some patients also complain about mouth sores and irritation caused by the brackets and wires, but this usually goes away after the first few weeks of treatment.

#2 - Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but they are bonded to the back of the teeth instead of the front. This makes them virtually invisible, which is a major advantage for patients who don't want their braces to be visible.

Lingual braces are strong and durable, and can also treat even severe cases of misalignment. There is also a type of lingual braces that are self-ligating, meaning that they don't require rubber bands or other ligatures to hold the archwire in place. This can make treatment faster and more comfortable.

The main disadvantage of lingual braces is that they are more expensive than traditional metal braces. They are also more difficult to clean and sometimes cause irritation to the tongue.

#3 - Clear Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear or tooth-colored brackets that are bonded to the front of the teeth. They are less visible than traditional metal braces but more visible than lingual braces.

Ceramic braces are strong and durable and can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems. While many say that they are prone to damage and staining, the modern technology used in the ceramic material is now making them much more durable and long-lasting.

The main disadvantage of ceramic braces is that they can be more expensive than traditional metal braces. Aside from that, you will need to clean them more thoroughly since they are clear, and the food stuck in them may be more visible than the other options.

Benefits of Achieving Straight Teeth With Braces

#1 - Improved Dental Health

Straight teeth are easier to clean, so you are less likely to experience tooth decay or gum disease. This is because braces help close the gaps between teeth, making it more difficult for plaque and bacteria to build up.

#2 - Enhanced Aesthetics

Of course, one of the most obvious benefits of braces is that they can improve the appearance of your smile. Having straight teeth can increase your self-confidence and help you feel better about yourself. In addition, straighter teeth tend to wear down less quickly and last longer than crooked teeth.

#3 - Improved Functionality

Braces can also improve the functionality of your teeth. For example, if you have an overbite, braces can help correct the problem so that your teeth function more efficiently.

#4 - Reduced Risk of Injury

Crooked teeth are more prone to injury since they are not as protected by the rest of the teeth. This means that you are more likely to chip or break a tooth if your teeth are properly aligned.

#5 - Improved Digestion

Believe it or not, braces can also help with digestion. With straight teeth, you are able to chew food more effectively, which aids in the digestion process.

#6 - Relief from Pain

If you have crooked teeth, you may experience pain in your jaw or elsewhere in your face. Once they have been straightened with braces, this pain will go away.
